Science Club to host January events

January will bring two offerings for the community from the Sisters Science Club.

Ron Thorkildson will be giving a course on "Weather Fundamentals" at SPRD, each Tuesday from 1 to 2 p.m., January 8 to February 12.

The course will cover the composition and thermal structure of the atmosphere; the Coriolis Effect and how it drives global wind circulation, how weather data are coded on surface maps from which high- and low-pressure regions and fronts are drawn; the relationship of the ambient, dew point and wet-bulb temperatures and their importance; how to read online weather models; and how terrain features affect local weather here in Central Oregon.

Contact SPRD at 541-549-2091 for more information.

On January 17 the club will start its monthly speaker series "Frontiers in Science." These will be held at The Belfry on the corner of Main Avenue and Spruce Street. The first speaker will be Professor Forrest Towne from COCC on the topic: "How Do We Become Smart?" Doors will open at 6:30 p.m.; lecture begins at 7 p.m.
