News and Opinion from Sisters, Oregon
Sisters junior Zoe Falk joined a contingent of Mountain View athletes and hundreds of other high school and college competitors from around the Northwest at the New Balance Boise Indoor Meet held Friday and Saturday, January 26-27 at Boise State University.
Tate Metcalf, of Sisters Athletic Club, coaches at Mountain View High School and arranged the trip to give some of his athletes a chance at some mid-winter competition. He invited Zoe to come along.
Falk competed in three events, beginning with the long jump on Friday, where she leapt 15 feet 4.5 inches to finish sixteenth among 44 high school girls.
Saturday presented the challenge of doubling in the 400 and 800 with only about an hour between the two races. Falk came through to finish in sixth place overall in 1:02.2, but almost certainly would have placed higher had she been in the faster heat.
The 800 meters featured some incredibly fast girls according to Falk. Although she did not run near her best, she felt content overall with her effort and from gaining the experience. She finished 10th in 2:31.77. Shea Martinez won the race in 2:13.09.
"I was astonished by all the outstanding athletes who participated," she said. "I learned a lot just by watching how other athletes prepared and raced."
The facility at Boise State impressed Falk as well. "I have never seen any sort of indoor track facility like this one," she said. "It was an insanely nice facility."
With some competition under her belt, Falk now looks forward to the outdoor season, which begins Monday, February 25.
"It is good to do some competition to see how my winter training is going," she said.
