News and Opinion from Sisters, Oregon

Sisters coach offers training

Ryan Hudson has found the perfect spot to ply his trade. The coach and personal trainer came to Sisters looking to settle down with his family in a small town with good schools - and to open a training facility where he could bring his skill and experience to bear in the right atmosphere.

He found it all at 801 E. Cascade Ave. (just past Sisters Elementary School). Here he and his family have established a home - and OlyFit personal training studio.

OlyFit blends the principles of CrossFit and Olympic weightlifting for a comprehensive fitness program delivered with private and semi-private instruction. Hudson is highly qualified to deliver that instruction: Not only is he a certified trainer and instructor, he's also an Oregon Olympic weightlifting champion and a CrossFit competitor.

Hudson emphasizes safety in his training. CrossFit and Olympic weighlifting are growing in popularity because the high-intensity workouts bring results, making clients stronger, fitter and able to handle anything that life throws at them. But intensity can lead to injury.

Hudson emphasizes proper technique first, then consistency, and then intensity.

"The number-one priority of my program is to prevent injury; number-two is to teach you to move properly; and number-three is to get fitter," he explained.

Another priority is affordability.

"We make it accessible to do private training at a semi-private or group price," Hudson said.

Training programs are customized and personalized, based around gymnastic bodyweight movements, Olympic lifts and the building of endurance. The protocol is scalable for people of all ages and all fitness levels. Hudson believes his target clientele is those who are active but want to improve their performance in recreational endeavors or sports.

Hudson believes those who are seeking the benefits of high-intensity CrossFit-style training but who don't want to be part of a gym or a large group environment will find a good fit at OlyFit.

Hudson and wife Jennifer lived in Central Oregon for a while before spending a couple of years in Jackson Hole, Wyoming.

"We always had our eye on Sisters," Hudson said. "We just knew Sisters would be the best place to raise a family, and this is where we wanted (their two children) to go to school."

The key was finding a suitable live-work situation, which the chalet on East Cascade provides.

"We saw the opportunity and just pulled the trigger," Hudson said.

OlyFit offers training slots on Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., by appointment only and on a first-come-first-served basis. When the allotted slots are full, there will be a waiting list. Call 541-639-5300 for more information.
