News and Opinion from Sisters, Oregon
Each year, visual artists from the Sisters community and beyond donate art pieces to be offered during the 'My Own Two Hands' live and silent auctions. The event, which benefits programs of the Sisters Folk Festival, has become a signature Sisters event in its own right.
Last Friday was the day when the festival received the art for this year's MOTH event, with the theme of "Deep Roots."
"It's one of the most incredible days of the year for us, as immensely talented artists donate beautiful work in support of music, arts education and self-expression for young people. The impact is felt for years to come through programming that supports youth and enhances and contributes to our community," says Executive Director Brad Tisdel.
This year three Central Oregon art professionals were selected to jury the donated artwork. The jurors separated the art into silent and live auction categories. Jurors then decided on one Theme Award, three Awards of Merit, one Americana Folk Award, a Spirit of Giving Award, a Ben Westlund Advocate for the Arts Award, and one Student Achievement Award. Each juror had one vote for each award. The jury met to award these deserving recipients, who will be recognized the evening of the auction.
My Own Two Hands is an annual event produced by Sisters Folk Festival, Inc. The weekend event will help to raise money for arts education in the Sisters School District and community. The Community Parade, Art Stroll and Performing Arts Evening will be held April 12 in downtown Sisters, with the Art Auction and Party April 13 at Ponderosa Forge & Ironworks.
Hundreds of students in Sisters participate in the My Own Two Hands celebration, with the guidance of co-founder/director Brad Tisdel; Americana Project instructors Kit Stafford, Rick Johnson, Tony Cosby, Bill Macdonald; and art teachers Bethany Gunnarson and Clay Warburton.
