News and Opinion from Sisters, Oregon
Slater Smith and his band, The Weather Machine, will celebrate the release of their eponymously titled new CD at The Belfry on April 6.
"We recorded the album on the Oregon Coast in Pacific City at Kiwanda Sound studios," Smith told The Nugget. "The record includes my friend Colin Robson, who also owns the studio; Jack Martin, a college friend of mine; Matthew Catmill on cello, a Sisters High grad; and my little brother Tanner on drums. For live shows, we've recruited our drummer friend Corey Kintzi (a PSU graduate from their jazz program) since Tanner is based in Boston."
While Smith provided the lyrics, "when it came to the instrumentation, that was the whole band working together."
The CD has a wide range stylistically.
"It's all over the place," Smith said. "It's got a bunch of different sounds on it. I'm kind of proud of how it flows for being so eclectic."
Smith noted that the arrangements built from the cello, an unusual approach that lent a unique feeling to the songs.

The show at The Belfry will also include performances by Jaime Simundson and the Travis Ehrenstrom Band. Show starts at 8 p.m .; tickets are available at the door; students with ID are admitted free.
The Belfry is located at 302 E. Main Ave.
