News and Opinion from Sisters, Oregon
Blustery and wet spring weather greeted the Outlaws in a three-way Sky-Em League meet at Junction City Thursday, April 4. Despite some season-best efforts, Sisters could not overcome Cottage Grove's overall depth and Junction City's speed in the sprint events.
Official team scores turned out to be inaccurate, but it was confirmed that Sisters placed third among the three schools.
The boys team scored the bulk of its points at distances of 800 meters and above, and from Jake McAllister's performances in the hurdles and jumping events.
McAllister won the 300 hurdles (44.11), the high jump (5 feet 10 inches), and second in the long jump in which he established a new personal best of 19 feet 7 inches.
A crew of freshmen distance runners covered the points for the Outlaws in the absence of Brandon Pollard, who is out for two to four weeks with a hairline fracture in his foot. Izaak Kanzig won the 800 (2:12), Dyut Fetrow won the 3,000 (10:14.91) and Gabe Rice (4:49) and Jadon Bachtold (4:51) placed second and third in the 1,500.
Another frosh, Austin Sandsness (12.24), edged his senior teammate Andrew Snyder by .01 seconds in the 100 meters as the pair placed third and fourth respectively for the only sprint points of the day for the Outlaws. Just .04 seconds separated the top four finishers in the 100.
Ian Baldessari picked up a tie for first place in the 110 hurdles with a time of 17.86 seconds and Kyle Wattenberg picked up the only points for the team in the throwing events with a third-place finish in the discus (100 feet, 11 inches) and a fourth-place effort in the javelin (108 feet 4 inches). While he did not score, Wattenberg also picked up a personal best in the shot put with a toss of 33 feet 11 inches.
"We look to score in every event this week - throwing, jumping, sprinting, hurdling, and running - to keep up with the competition," said Head Coach Josh Nordell. "We are coming together as a team more each week."
The Outlaws host the Elmira Falcons and the La Pine Hawks Thursday, April 11 in another three-way Sky-Em League meet. Field events begin at 4 p.m. and running events get started at 4:30 p.m.
