News and Opinion from Sisters, Oregon
Has your business ever wanted to work with a high school intern? Have you wanted to support Sisters High School and its students?
Sisters High School School 2 Career Coordinator Morgan Davis is charged with supporting the Sisters High School's School 2 Career and Youth Transition Program (YTP).
"I want to establish working relationships with business owners who are interested in supporting our students. My goal is to compile a list of individuals who are willing to provide employment or training opportunities for our youth and connect those business owners with interested students," Davis said.
School 2 Career is designed to provide internship or employment opportunities for students in which they are able to receive elective credit. The students can intern at local businesses during or after school hours. The student is required to fill out a contract with their supervisor, keep track of their hours and turn in an evaluation form after their placement. The internship experience can provide valuable on-the-job training, additional skills and instill pride and responsibility in the students. Internships can be anything from an hour each school day for a 10-week period or a more substantial amount of time.
The YTP is funded through Vocational Rehabilitation, which is a division of the Department of Human Services. The program supports students who meet specified criteria and offers job coaches, reimbursement for tools and uniforms, and potential wage reimbursement for employers during the initial hiring period. Some of these students may require more training, but are also in need of finding a positive work experience within the Sisters community.
"I believe in order for the town of Sisters to grow in a positive direction, it is vital to provide experiences for our young adults to stay active in the community," Davis said. "Potentially, if we can offer employment, more students are likely to stay in Sisters after graduation, which will then in turn support the existing businesses."
