Habitat seeks gals for "Women Build'

Sisters Habitat for Humanity will host its Second Annual Women Build on May 9-10 in recognition of National Women Build Week. Women of Sisters will gather to help landscape a home for the Heiden-Smith family and frame a home for the Casanova family.

The organization is asking interested women to sign up for a morning or afternoon shift either Thursday or Friday. There will be a mandatory orientation on Wednesday, May 8, at 5:30 p.m. at the Sisters Library.

Construction or home improvement experience is not necessary; however, Habitat strongly encourages volunteers to participate in a framing workshop on April 28. Time and place will be announced.

Lowe's has awarded the chapter $5,000 to help purchase building materials for the event.

Part of the plan calls for landscaping at the home of Jennifer Heiden, Randy Smith and their children Soren and Serafina. Jennifer is very excited and thankful that Women Build will help with the landscaping.

Jennifer requests, "You know what I would love? I would love it if participants could bring a plant, an extra from their yard, or a favorite of theirs. And a little plant tag with their name and the name of the plant."

In addition to landscaping at the Heiden-Smith house, the Women Build teams will be framing the home to be purchased by Bob, Linda, and Cole Casanova.

Linda says, "When we first heard that our new home was to be part of the Second Annual Women Build, we thought, how appropriate! I grew up with a hammer in one hand and a bag of nails in the other. Although I am disabled now, I plan on driving a nail into the first 2x4 and hope to cheer on the women of Sisters throughout the event. My family and I are so thankful and blessed to be part of this community and are looking forward to becoming new homeowners in it."

Registration is required. To volunteer, donate, or for more information, call Sisters Habitat for Humanity at 541-549-1193 or email [email protected]
