News and Opinion from Sisters, Oregon
The boys golf team has worked all year with hopes of making it to the state tournament, and this past week their dreams came true. Sisters took second place at the district tournament, held at Tokatee on Monday and Tuesday, May 6 and 7, which earned them a berth to state.
Sisters finished with a two-day team total of 725, behind Cottage Grove, who took top honors with a score of 714. Third place went to Sweet Home (751), Junction City was fourth (773) and La Pine rounded out the scores at 792.
Nate Pajutee and Tyler Berg both earned first-team all-conference honors. Pajutee shot an 86 in round one and an 82 in round two for a two-day total of 168, which gave him top medalist honors. Berg shot an 82-88-170 to come in just two strokes behind Pajutee.
On day one, Pajutee had a rough time on the front nine and shot a 48 but took 10 strokes off that on the back nine for a 38 and a great finish.
"Nate could have easily given up after shooting that 48 on the front," said Coach Bill Mitchell. "He really turned it around on the back nine and then came back the next day with an 82 to win the conference tournament. It was just great."
Mitchell also praised Berg for his consistent performance.
"Tyler has been our most consistent player all year and he was consistent both days at the tournament," stated Mitchell. "He was also the only player to make to it every practice and play in every event this year."
Nolan Ferwalt carded a 92-97-187 and Jacob Hanson rounded out the scores with a two-day total of 200.
"I'm so glad we're going to state," said Mitchell. "We haven't been as competitive as I though we'd be this year, and we want to go out in style. Our goal is to shoot our best team score of the year at state."
Mitchell added, "It was pretty nice for our first two players (Pajutee and Berg) to get on the first all-conference team and our third player (Nolan Ferwalt) to get on the second team. I'm proud of all of them for that."
