News and Opinion from Sisters, Oregon

Chamber volunteers love the work

Ronni Duff and Lois Worcester have helped a lot of people get to know Sisters better over the years. It's the thing they like best about their job. That job is volunteering at the Sisters Area Chamber of Commerce Visitors Center.

Worcester has been at it for 16 years.

"I've worked in five different buildings," she said.

Lois is a people person, and she gets to meet all kinds when they come in for information.

"I just find meeting people so rewarding," she said. "And you meet them from all over. It's also great to represent the community."

That's Duff's main motivator. She's been volunteering since 2008.

"I love Sisters," she said. "I love Sisters. I just like sharing Sisters with people."

The pair would like to share the pleasures of volunteering with others. The chamber is actively looking for visitors center volunteers as the tourist season heats up.

While a good working knowledge of what's available to folks visiting Sisters is helpful, volunteers are not on their own.

"There's tons of resources," Duff said. "You just need to know where to look and be willing to do a little homework."

When they're not helping visitors, the volunteers are organizing the multitude of brochures and flyers about activities and events. They also put together relocation packets for people contemplating turning a visit into something more permanent.

Both Duff and Worcester say they enjoy coming in for their twice-monthly three-hour shifts, thanks to Executive Director Erin Borla and Office Manager Jeri Buckmann.

"They make it very rewarding to be here," Worcester said. "They make it a very enjoyable place to work. If you want to spend your time wisely, I would highly recommend it."
