Chapman scores a hole-in-one

Senior Holly Chapman went out in style in the last golf tournament of her high school career when she nailed a hole-in-one at the district tournament held at Brasada Ranch, Monday and Tuesday, May 6 and 7. Chapman is the first golf player from Sisters High School's golf teams to ever record a hole-in-one.

Chapman made the incredible shot on day two of the tourney, on the No. 12 par three hole. Holly hit it off the tee with her seven iron over 70 yards right onto the green, and to her amazement the ball rolled right into the cup.

"When it hit, it felt like any other shot," said Holly. "When it landed on the green, I was happy that I didn't shank it into the sagebrush that surrounded the green. As it rolled closer to the hole, I thought to myself, 'Wow! I could birdie this hole!' And then it got even closer and the dad of one of the girls I was playing with yelled, 'Get in the hole!' When it went in, I couldn't believe it. I was almost speechless. The eight people watching were screaming so loud that our assistant coach, Phil Lagao, heard it from the next hole and drove back to see what happened.

"I saved my ball and my scorecard so that I could keep them forever," added Chapman. "My parents are getting me a trophy with a spot that I can put the ball in. Even though I actually saw it go in, I still can't believe that I actually got a hole-in-one. My great-grandpa got three hole-in-ones and I am excited that I got one as well."

Coach Bill Mitchell said, "People don't care what you shoot if you get a hole-in-one. That's a moment that most golfers never experience their entire lifetime. It's a real sense of accomplishment and I'm so happy for her."

After two rounds of golf, team scores were tallied, and La Pine came out on top with a score of 788. Cottage Grove was runner-up at 840, Ridgeview placed third at 889 and Sisters rounded out the scores with a two-day total of 942. Both La Pine and Cottage Grove will advance to the state tournament next week.

Codie Lagao posted a 104-96 for a total of 200 to lead the Lady Outlaws. Chapman posted a 102-100 to finish just two strokes back from Lagao at 202. Freshman Karly Vial, in only her fourth career tournament, posted a two-day total of 240 for her best round of the season by 30 shots. Adi Goodwin finished at 300.

"Codie has been our best player all year," said Mitchell. "She has a lot of potential and I hope she works hard over the summer. I expect great things from her next year."
