Tad and Shirley Halladay are serving up gourmet dogs on homemade buns at Odd Dawgz in Sisters.
If the hot dog isn't the official food of summer, it ought to be. At least if it's a first-class gourmet hot dog provided by Odd Dawgz in Sisters.
The new hot dog stand opened in the space next to Sisters Market this month. Tad Halladay and his wife Shirley offer a menu of gourmet dogs, served up on Shirley's home-baked hot dog buns. These are not merely something to hold a dog smothered in mustard or sauerkraut: They are a flavorful part of the meal.
The dogs themselves are not your average dog, either.
"The dogs are quarter-pound," says Tad. "We do kind of a diamond cut on them. It has more surface area to caramelize. It's just a gourmet dog."
The result is a simple, quick and inexpensive meal with exceptional flavor.
Shirley's home-baked cookies make for a lunchtime dessert.
Tad is a retired police officer, who spent his career with the San Joaquin Sheriff's Department in Stockton, California. The couple also operated businesses throughout his career, including a shipping business in Oregon. The couple fell in love with Oregon and determined to move here to run the shipping business on Tad's retirement. They ended up selling the company - but moved anyway.
Admitting to being bored as a retired officer, Tad was happy to open a business in Sisters - even though the couple lives in Sweet Home. They currently commute three days a week from Sweet Home and stay with friends in Bend the rest of the week. They plan to eventually move here.
The Halladays appreciate the warm welcome they've received in Sisters.
"The community's really supported us so far," Tad said.
The couple plans to be open through October, and perhaps longer if business justifies it. They'll be back for sure next May.
