New quilt shop opens in Sisters

The quilting landscape in Sisters has a new feature: The Quilt Shack has opened for the summer at 270 E. Cascade Ave. (next to Bandits Mercantile).

Rhonda Krider opened the shop as a seasonal endeavor complementing her establishment of the same name in Prineville. She carries a wide selection of fabric with outdoorsy, Western and vintage Americana themes, including some novelty fabrics that complement her neighbor's wares with a vintage biker or Route 66 theme.

"I carry patterns and books of our local gals," Krider noted. That includes the work of noted Prineville quilter June Jaeger.

Krider got into quilting about eight years ago, seeking a creative outlet for her sewing skills.

"My girls grew up and they didn't want me to make their little matching dresses anymore," she said with a smile.

She had owned a coffee shop in Prineville, and was casting about for a business. She tried staying home and being a housewife, but she says, "I wasn't any good at that. I have to be doing something in the public."

So The Quilt Shack was born.

Krider was excited by the lack of social barriers in the modern quilting movement.

"There's no rules anymore," she says. "You can be young, you can be old; it doesn't matter. I have three guys in Prineville who quilt."

Krider has found Sisters most welcoming to her seasonal endeavor.

"So far, the town's been very, very happy," she reported.

Sisters becomes the center of the quilting universe in the month of July, and Krider is ready to participate.

"We're going to have Christmas-in-July," she said. "We're hanging up the chili pepper lights. We're just going to have some fun."

Krider is commuting between stores, which makes for some drive time, but she's enjoying connecting with the Sisters community.

"I love my customers," she says. "That's why I'm here."
