'Canine Carnival' featured in pet event

Sisters folks and their furry friends can enjoy the Canine Carnival that is part of the upcoming Sisters Doggie Dash & Stroll.

The carnival features pet vendors, food vendors (for people and pets), pet products, and pet services. One feature is an interactive lure coursing demonstration by The Greyhound Pets of America with lightning-fast greyhounds racing for fun. Your dog can also try the course; make sure to bring a camera to photograph their accomplishments. Plenty of doggie-dipping pools will make sure your furry friends stay cool throughout the activities.

The Humane Society of the Ochocos will be there with dogs for adoption and, if you don't have a dog to accompany you in the dash or stroll, they have some adoptable dogs who would love to join you in the event.

Early registration is underway for the Sisters Doggie Dash & Stroll set for August 3 at Sisters Park & Recreation District (SPRD) from 8:30 a.m. to noon. The main events will be the 3-mile (5K) dash and a shorter hike (or slower pace) option of the 2-mile (3.2K) stroll. The dash and stroll wind through the trees on flat terrain with doggie dipping pools along the route for a refreshing splash. All dogs must be on a leash and owners need to present a current rabies certificate for their dog. Participants will receive a T-shirt and goody bag; the first 70 will also receive a bandana.

The dash begins at 9 a.m. and the stroll starts at 9:10 a.m. Early registration (prior to August 1) is $25 per participant (dog and owner) or $50 for up to three participants. To register on the day of the event will cost an additional $5. Register online at http://www.sistersrecreation.com or drop applications off at SPRD or the Sisters Library.

Proceeds from the event go to the Friends of Sisters Library library reading programs, SPRD, and Furry Friends Foundation.

Presented by FOSL, the event is supported by sponsors including Central Bark/Groomingdales, Petsmart, Rotary Club of Sisters, Sisters Kiwanis, Sisters Veterinary Clinic, The Nugget Newspaper, Ray's Food Place, Bank of the Cascades, GreenRidge Physical Therapy, and Lutton's Ace Hardware.
