News and Opinion from Sisters, Oregon
Sisters Habitat for Humanity honored their many volunteers with a barbecue at Village Green Park on Wednesday, August 14.
Since 1991, the dedicated efforts of Habitat volunteers have helped 50 families achieve their goal of home ownership. Volunteers serve as board and committee members, work at the Habitat Thrift Store and ReStore, and hammer nails on construction sites.
At the barbecue, the newest homeowner, Randy Smith, sang a song of "thank-you" to the crowd of nearly 100, and then explained that the difference between a working person and a volunteer is that "the paycheck for a volunteer is a thank-you." Future homeowner Linda Casanova is currently helping to construct her new Habitat home with the building volunteers.
She told the crew, "You are my heroes and I am truly blessed every day to work with you."
Sisters Habitat inducted five new members into the "1,000-Hour Club" that night. Thrift Store volunteers Barbara Slanderer, Linda Huber and Carol Neary; ReStore volunteer Ed Protas and current Board President Kevin Neary joined 77 previous members who have volunteered over 1,000 hours with Sisters Habitat.
The chapter is considered one of the most active for its size.
A new-volunteer orientation is held the third Wednesday of each month. To RSVP or for more information, call 541-549-1193 or email Sisters Habitat for Humanity honored their many volunteers with a barbecue at Village Green Park on Wednesday, August 14.
