New owner pursues excellence

Eyal Goldman knows that nobody loves to go to the dry cleaners.

"Dry cleaning, at the end of the day, is a chore for anybody," says the owner of Cathy's Cleaners. "Nobody wants to go to the dry cleaners. The reason we're here is for our customers' convenience."

"Here" is a new location at 424 W. Washington Ave. near the intersection with Pine Street.

Previously called Susan's Cleaners and Carol's Cleaners, the business is now Cathy's Cleaners. It will offer expanded services that are offered in Bend and Redmond, including free pick-up and delivery leathers, alterations, wedding, and fluff & fold service.

Susan Windell of the original Susan's Cleaners and Tamara Dumolt will be a part of the Cathy's Cleaners team.

"We want to be involved and support the Sisters community, and having them on our team is an incredible bonus," said Eyal Goldman, owner. "Our hours are another part of supporting the community. We will be open Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. to ensure availability and accessibility."

Goldman takes convenience seriously, offering customers flexibility and a can-do attitude when they're under pressure.

"We'll make runs," Goldman told The Nugget. "What we tell our employees is that 'no' is not the default answer to anything."

Convenience is only part of the equation for Goldman. Cathy's cleaners is aggressively pursuing excellence in the quality of their work, installing state-of-the-art equipment and working with experts in the field to streamline operations and enhance employee knowledge of how to care for all kinds of fabrics.

"We really just upped the game," Goldman said.

Cathy's Cleaners initiated a new, eco-friendly garment cleaning process called Enviro Clean. It is a process that does not use harsh chemicals or solvents, offers better cleaning performance, and leaves clothes looking newer and feeling softer without damage to the clothing or the environment.

"We're definitely the only one on this side of the Cascades that is doing it," Goldman said.

Dry cleaning is a process that uses a chemical solvent instead of water. Enviro Clean uses only water, bio-degradable and non-toxic detergents and conditioners that are as safe as home laundering products. This gives Enviro Clean the distinction of being called "an example of environmentally preferable technology for cleaning garments" by the EPA. Enviro Clean produces no hazardous waste, no air pollution and leaves no chemical smell.

Enviro Clean is safe for all fabrics, even those marked "dry clean only."

"A 'dry clean only' label is meaningless to us now," Goldman said.

Traditional dry cleaning methods are still in use, and Cathy's Cleaners uses a "double bath" process to ensure that all clothing, no matter what time of day it's brought in, is treated with clean solvent.

Clothing is separated and packaged carefully for added convenience once clients bring it home.
