Raffle winner delighted with quilt

Sandie Lane, a summertime resident of Newport, Oregon, was the winner of the Furry Friends Foundation fundraising raffle quilt. The drawing for the quilt was held over Labor Day Weekend.

Lane purchased the winning ticket during the Sisters Outdoor Quilt Show in July. It was her fourth visit to the event.

"I've gotta say, I was shocked," she said. "I've been a quilter for 15 years and I think I've spent a thousand dollars on raffle tickets."

This is the first time she's won anything.

Lane can appreciate the quilt on a couple of levels. She appreciates the craft.

"The quilt is so darling," she said. "Every time I look at it I see something new."

She is also an ardent supporter of the kind of support Furry Friends provides for animals.

"Furry Friends is an amazing organization," she said. "I have a rescue dog ... and that is the only kind of dog I've ever had."

Her dog Maggiemay is a Lhaso apso she rescued from a shelter in Lancaster, California. The dog was scheduled to be euthanized the next day.

The raffle raised $2,417.74, which will go to provide pet food to families in need through the pet food bank at Sisters Kiwanis food bank. It will also help to cover sponsorships for spay and neuter procedures.

Furry Friends Foundation founder Kiki Dolson noted, "We currently have some spay and neuter sponsorships available, so we encourage people with a dog or cat that needs to get fixed to contact us. It's simple."

The quilt was made by Valerie Fercho-Tillery, a quilter who vacations at her property in Sisters and plans to move here eventually.

"Rumor has it that Valerie will be making a different quilt for us next year," Dolson said.
