Lady Outlaws clip the Falcons

The Lady Outlaws tallied their first league win of the season with a 5-1 victory at home against Elmira on Thursday, September 19.

Sisters scored their first goal of the contest in the fifth minute of play when Haley Carlson crossed the ball in from the left side. Emily Corrigan brought the ball down with her chest and was able to find the back of the net.

In the 33rd minute Dani Rudinsky won the ball up front and put together a combination, which culminated when Carlson drove the shot in from the left side of the box. The score held and Sisters entered the half on top at 2-0.

Elmira scored their lone goal at the start of the second half. A PK was called against the Outlaws from a hand ball in the box. The Falcons made the PK and gained some momentum as they closed Sisters' lead to 2-1.

Sisters was a bit frustrated as they struggled to find the back of the net, but they never gave up. Their determination broke through and they scored three goals in the last 10 minutes of play.

At the 72-minute mark Hannah Ceciliani won the ball in the attacking third and crossed the ball across the face of the goal. Natalie Ambrose connected with the cross and sent the ball into the right side of the net. Four minutes later, Liz Stewart took a shot which bounced off the goalkeeper and Corrigan was there to finish the shot. With two minutes left on the clock, Stewart dribbled the ball past three Falcon defenders and drove the ball into the back of the net.

Coach Audrey Tehan told The Nugget that Sisters was challenged by Elmira's tenacious defense and noted that the Falcons did a good job of breaking up the Outlaws' attacks.

Several players made big contributions in the win.

"Liz (Stewart) did an amazing job as defensive center midfielder and is ready to show the league that once again she is dangerous up front and in the back. Liz, along with Natalie (Ambrose), Cassandra (Arruda), and Haley (Carlson) across the midfield are hard to get past and are relentless in their attacking and combination plays. Cassandra is doing an amazing job on the outside and in the center for us, creating great combination plays with other players and attacking with the ball.

"Nina (Horner) had a great game on the field and in the goal as well as Hannah (Ceciliani)," added Tehan. "Haley (Carlson) had her best game and beat many players one-on-one. I was impressed with her level of play."

The Outlaws will play at Cottage Grove on Thursday, September 26. Game is scheduled for 7 p.m.
