News and Opinion from Sisters, Oregon
The girls soccer team put another win in the record books with a 6-0 shutout at Elmira, Tuesday, October 8.
A muddy field filled with potholes caused the Outlaws to constantly slip, which made for a very tough start. Sisters kept pushing forward, kept their composure and finally got into a rhythm.
Haley Carlson got the Outlaws on the scoreboard in the fifth minute. Carlson shot from the right outside midfield position from 25 yards out and sent a perfect ball over the keeper's head. Anna Ortega was there for the assist.
At the half the Outlaws held a 1-0 lead.
Natalie Ambrose scored at the 62- and 68-minute marks and Sisters went up 3-0. Natalie scored on a penalty kick with a perfect low shot into the right corner and then got a loose ball outside of the 18-yard box, trapped it, beat a player into the box, and took a hard, low shot.
Two minutes later, Molly Boyle, who was playing left outside midfielder, served a ball to Liz Stewart who trapped the ball and sent it into the net right past Elmira's keeper.
Stewart came right back and scored again in the 75th minute. Liz trapped a ball sent out from Elmira's defense, dribbled past two players and placed a long shot into the right-hand corner of the net.
The Outlaws' sixth and final goal came with one minute left in the contest. Boyle sent a great ball across the face of the goal and Emily Corrigan volleyed an amazing shot into the left side of the goal.
Coach Audrey Tehan said, "Even though the girls did not connect on a lot of shots until three quarters through the game they just kept at it, which is a hard thing to do."
Tehan noted Molly Boyle and Michaela Miller for their exceptional play.
"Molly and Michaela both did a phenomenal job at outside midfield and also at center defense," said Tehan. "They are able to switch positions and adjust quickly, which allows our team to throw off our opponents with two high-skilled players with completely different styles."
Tehan told The Nugget that as the Lady Outlaws head into the second set of league games they are working hard on refining their shape on the field and their attacking movement. Tehan noted that her players are constantly challenging themselves in games and are eager to improve.
The Outlaws will play at home against Cottage Grove on Thursday, October 17.
