Outlaw Martial Arts thrives in new location

Master Marty Kaczmarek built a thriving Taekwondo program under the umbrella of Sisters Park & Recreation District. Now the program is out on its own in a new location at 352 E. Hood Ave.

SPRD kind of felt like we were monopolizing the room - and we wanted more time," said Master Marty Kaczmarek, better-known as Master K.

The move has enabled flexibility in scheduling classes for some 75 students and has allowed Master K to add or expand programs.

The new site includes a space for kids to hang out before or after classes, a small rock climbing wall and fitness equipment for popular martial arts classes.

Those classes combine weight training and martial arts drills in a circuit.

"We call it MAXFit, which stands for Martial Arts Extreme Fitness," Master K said.

It's not just for people enrolled in a Taekwondo class.

"About half of the people in the MAXFit class are martial artists - the other half should be martial artists," Master K said.

The classes can be accessed on a drop-in basis for $10 per class; during November, MAXFit classes are open to anyone who brings a donation of food for the Sisters Kiwanis Food Bank.

Parents are also allowed to use the fitness area while their kids are in class.

Outlaw Martial Arts has an after-school program where kids can come and do their homework with help from two high school students who are receiving credits for their work.

About once a month, on a Friday or Saturday, Jaymie Kaczmarek organizes a "Parents' Night Out" where parents can drop off their kids from 5 to 9 p.m. This Saturday, October 26, the event has a Halloween theme and kids are invited to wear their costumes (they are also requested to bring a flashlight).

It's a fun evening of games and activities for the kids and a welcome break for mom and dad. Cost is $20 for the first child; $15 for the second.

The focus of Outlaw Martial Arts remains on the martial arts. Master K teaches the Olympic version of Taekwondo - fast and athletic. His students, both young people and adults have competed in regional and even national tournaments. He is a dedicated instructor who gives his students a disciplined and focused program.
