News and Opinion from Sisters, Oregon
A 23-year-old Sisters woman was cited for driving while intoxicated and reckless driving after a head-on crash at the eastern edge of Sisters early Sunday morning. The woman suffered non-life-threatening injuries.
According to the Deschutes County Sheriff's Office, deputies were dispatched at 5:30 a.m. to a two-vehicle traffic crash on Highway 20 West at Buckaroo Trail at the east end of the Sisters city limits, near the FivePine development. The posted speed for this area is 35 mph.
The investigation revealed the woman was driving her 2002 Volkswagen Jetta wagon westbound on Highway 20 when she drove into the path of a 2004 Ford F-350 pick-up, which was eastbound on Highway 20 driven by a man from Aumsville, Oregon.
The eastbound driver attempted to avoid the collision; however, the two vehicles hit head-on. The eastbound driver and his passenger were unhurt.
Personnel from the Sisters-Camp Sherman fire district responded to the scene and began extrication efforts on the Sisters woman. Both airbags had deployed on her vehicle. The roof of the vehicle had to be removed in order to remove the diver from the vehicle. She was transported to St. Charles-Bend where she was treated for non-life-threatening injuries.
The driver was later cited in lieu of custody for Driving Under the Influence of Intoxicants and Reckless Driving. The charges are misdemeanors, unless there have been multiple DUII convictions.
According to the sheriff's office, Highway 20 was closed for approximately one hour until both vehicles could be towed from the scene. The sheriff's office was assisted by the Oregon State Police and ODOT.
The crash is still under investigation.
