Camp Sherman resident Bethanne Kronick returned from the Head of the Charles Rowing Regatta in Boston last month with a gold medal in the mixed quad rowing competition.
The Head of the Charles is the largest international race of its kind. Over 9,000 competitors and 350,000 spectators from all over the world descended on Boston for this annual event. The course is 5 kilometers long, and competitors must navigate under six bridges on their way to the finish line.
Kronick has been training at Suttle Lake for over 15 years and said "the Head of the Charles Regatta is the biggest race of the season for me. The competition is incredibly tough. I train hard and always look forward to the race."
Bethanne was joined in her boat by three other members of her team from the Willamette Rowing Club in Portland. The mixed quad is made up of two females and two males. The Willamette boat, one of 25 in this particular race, beat the next fastest boat by three seconds over the five kilometers.
Kronick said this year's race was one of the best she has rowed. Water conditions on the Charles River can be challenging at best.
"It's exciting to end the season with a Head of the Charles win," she said.
Kronick will be found back on Suttle Lake until winter weather drives her indoors to her rowing machine.
