News and Opinion from Sisters, Oregon
- Jim Smith wrote: If you didn't attend the Cascade Horizon Band concert at the Sisters High School this past Saturday afternoon, you missed a sterling performance.
Seventy-plus musicians lead by Director Sue Steiger outdid themselves.
A few marches, but more especially music from "Les Miserables," The "1812 Overture" by Tchaikovsky, "Victory at Sea," "This is My Country," the Armed Forces "Pride of America," and selections by Irving Berlin entertained a well-attended performance.
I couldn't help but regret that many missed the event for reasons unknown.
Sue Steiger has directed this organization since it's inception.
Since that inauspicious beginning 10 years ago, Sue has built the Cascade Horizon Band into a well-knit concert band.
In the beginning, the band was made up of retirees, some with musical experience and others without, starting maybe at 50 years of age to others who are over 80 today.
The band continued to grow under Sue's leadership to what it is today.
Sisters is well-represented, by the way, with several members who reside here in town.
Sue graduated from Cal State, Long Beach with a bachelor's degree in music, then continued graduate work before transferring to UCLA, with further studies at Lewis & Clark and Portland State.
Her teaching career began in 1979 and recently concluded with her retirement after 29 years from the Bend-La Pine School District.
However, she's not stopping there.
We will see and hear more from Sue, as she has accepted a position as band director at Sisters High and Sisters Middle Schools.
This position has limped along since Jody Henderson's departure four years ago.
Jody left big shoes to fill, and there's no-one more qualified to fill those shoes than Sue Steiger.
Welcome, Sue! If you missed Saturday's performance, don't despair.
More programs are planned for the future.
The band has already started rehearsals for their Christmas program.
Check the website http://www.cascadehorizonband.org for more about the band.
Stay tuned to The Nugget for announcements for future concerts and attend - you won't regret it.
- The Sisters/Camp Sherman RFPD would like to thank all of you who came and participated in our annual Halloween event this year. We had one of our biggest turnouts yet; over 325 kids came and played games and went through the haunted house. We also want to give special thanks to Ray's and Sisters Bakery for their donations of delicious cookies, which helped make the event a great success. Last but not least, thank you to The Nugget for reminding all of our guests who came and had a howling good time. We hope to see all the ghosts and goblins next year.
- Paul and Sue Edgerton wrote: We wish to thank everyone who has put so much time and energy and thought into planning for connecting trails in the Sisters area.
We especially want to thank the U.S. Forest Service staff, led by Sisters District Ranger Kristie Miller.
Also kudos to Sisters Trails Alliance.
They have been a positive force in our area.
The U.S. Forest Service has contributed so much to Sisters Country: expertise, leadership, protection, recreation opportunities, education for adults and children, and have facilitated cooperative efforts among different organizations for the betterment of our environment.
Just look at all the improvements on Whychus Creek, Camp Polk Meadow, Suttle Lake, Metolius River area, Glaze Meadow and more.
Thank you!
- Kathleen Davis thanks customers old and new for attending Davis Tire's 50th celebration and making it a success. "Also thanking the community as a whole for all their support through the years!"
- Mark and Bunny Thompson wrote: Mark and I would like to say thank you to all of you who have donated on Myra Fisher's behalf to the Caroline Paskowski Spina Bifida Fund at Bank of the Cascades. These funds will be used to assist other children with spina bifida, hopefully becoming seed money for a greater effort to help all children with spina bifida. Myra was very excited about this fund and I know she is so pleased to know how much everyone cared about her and about Caroline. Caroline continues to grow strong and will someday be just as pleased as Myra at your generosity. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts.
