News and Opinion from Sisters, Oregon

Holiday giving drives are underway

Sisters has proven year in and year out to be an exceptionally giving community. This year, Sisters offers many traditional opportunities to honor the season by helping members of the community who are in need.

Applications for the Kiwanis annual Christmas Food Share Program are now available at the Kiwanis Food Bank at Main Avenue and Oak Street, at the Sisters Family Access Network office in the school district administration building and at local churches.

The food share program will again provide gift certificates for meals as they did last year. Food 4 Less in Bend and Melvin's Fir Street Market in Sisters are the participating markets. Cash donations to the Christmas Food Share program are appreciated. To make a tax-deductible contribution send checks to P.O. Box 1296 Sisters, OR 97759.

Donations are much needed for the 2013 Furry Friends Food Drive.

Dry dog and cat food may be dropped off at The The Nugget Newspaper, 442 E. Main Ave., until December 19.

Food can also be purchased at Sisters Feed & Supply, and they will deliver.

A tax-deductible cash donation is especially helpful; it allows target purchasing of needed items, including specialty foods for allergic animals and food for senior pets, puppies and kittens.

Checks can be dropped off at The Nugget Newspaper office or mailed to Furry Friends Foundation, P.O. Box 698, Sisters, OR, 97759 or donate online at www.furryfriendsfoundation.org.

The Sisters-Camp Sherman Fire & Ambulance Association and the Sisters Kiwanis Club are sponsoring the annual "Spirit of Christmas Toy Drive" to provide Christmas gifts to families in need in Sisters Country during holiday season.

They expect to serve close to 250 families this year.

The association is collecting new, unwrapped gifts at the Sisters fire hall at 301 S. Elm St. in Sisters. There are "Spirit of Christmas" giving trees at Sisters Ray's Food Place and Bi-Mart. Pick a gift tag for a child from the tree and purchase specific gifts, or bring generic gifts to the fire station.

Cash donations are also accepted, are tax-deductible, and will go toward gift buying. The deadline for gift donations is Monday, December 16. For more information call the Sisters - Camp Sherman Fire District at 541-549-0771.

Black Butte Ranch Police Department is helping us out this year by placing a third tree at the Black Butte Ranch Post Office next to the police station (still waiting for confirmation that this is where they are placing the tree) to see if we can get all the tags filled this year. The other two trees are in Sisters: one at Bi-Mart and one at Ray's Food Place.
