News and Opinion from Sisters, Oregon
The Outlaws rushed the field and yelled and cheered in celebration after a 1-0 victory over the Henley Hornets in the state finals. For the first time in school history the boys soccer team took top honors as the state champions and brought home the trophy.
Hundreds of Sisters fans, including a full rooter bus attended the big game, which was held at Liberty High School in Hillsboro on Saturday, November 16.
The Outlaws scored in the 76th minute of the contest, with four minutes left on the clock.
Colton Mannhalter got the ball just past the midfield in the attacking third, split the defenders and laid the ball off at the top of the 18-yard box, over to Jake McAllister. McAllister finished with a shot across to the left corner of the net.
Mannhalter said, "We'd had so many chances, but when Jake finally scored, it was such a relief. It was great not having to go into overtime. We were just glad it ended in regulation."
Henley was a tough opponent, but the Outlaws came out with increased energy and in the second half put pressure on their goal.
After the final whistle blew, players on the bench weren't sure what to do. Coach Rob Jensen told The Nugget that it was a very official game and players had to adhere to strict rules, which included staying seated at all times if you were on the bench.
Jensen said, "I think the guys were in shock. They weren't sure if they could stand up or run onto the field. I just hollered at them, 'Get onto the field!'"
Mannhalter said, "We were yelling and jumping up and down and on top of each other. We were all so excited."
Evan Rickards said, "It was just incredible to have so many people who have supported us all year be with us on our final day to see us achieve it all. You always want to accomplish the most with those you love standing next to you."
The Outlaws' defense did a tremendous job, allowing Henley one shot at the goal the entire game.
Jensen said, "The entire defense played solid. Justin Harrer had a huge game, especially the second half. He really stepped it up and helped take away Henley's attack. Keenan (O'Hern) did a great job as goalie. He came out and challenged the ball and every time he got the ball he placed it in awesome attacking position."
Jensen noted that the championship couldn't have gone to a better group of players.
"Obviously, they're just great kids," said Jensen. "The championship couldn't have happened to a better group of boys. It was a great culmination for these seniors. I couldn't be more proud of these guys and I'm happy to be a part of it."
Colton Mannhalter was chosen as the Moda Player of the Match.
"Colton controlled the entire center of the field all day. He set up players and dictated the flow of the game," said Jensen.
The Outlaws finished their season with a 17-1-1 record and were 17-0 against 4A competition.
