News and Opinion from Sisters, Oregon
Backcountry Nordic skiers may have a new hut-to-hut route to ski in the future if the Forest Service approves a new route along the Metolius-Windigo Trail and FS Road 370 corridor in Sisters Country.
The 20-mile route was proposed by Three Sisters Backcountry, Inc., and would require an amendment of the outfitter and guide service's existing special-use permit.
Two equidistant huts would be established on the route, one in Happy Valley on the Bend-Fort Rock Ranger District and one near the junction of Road 16 and Road 370 on the Sisters Ranger District.
The huts would have kitchen facilities, padded bunks, a propane heater and a bathroom. Each hut would sleep eight skiers.
Three Sisters Backcountry, Inc. currently operates a couple of backcountry yurts and offers avalanche courses in the terrain around the Tam McArthur Rim.
The Forest Service is taking comment on the proposal. Submit written comments on the Three Sisters Backcountry Nordic Hut Project to Project Manager Sommer Moore by December 16 at P.O. Box 249, Sisters, OR, 97759. Comment electronically at [email protected] Put the project name in the subject line.
