Nordic team takes on first classic race

The Sisters Nordic team had their first classic race at Mt. Bachelor this past weekend with seven athletes completing the five-kilometer race.

The temperatures were much milder than last weekend, topping out in the mid-30s. Athletes were appreciative of the warmer temperatures, staying much warmer prior to the race. However, warmer temperatures presented their own difficulties, especially with temperatures hovering around 32 degrees Fahrenheit. Kick wax, the wax that sticks to the snow to provide propulsion down the track, can be difficult to account for at 32 degrees. But the Outlaws determined the proper wax for the conditions and the skiers were afforded good grip and glide for the race.

Approximately 70 girls and 70 boys entered into the 5k classic. The winning time was 15:16 for the girls and 13:56 for the boys. The lead skier for the Lady Outlaws was Betsy Ausman, who finished the race in 23:51. She was followed closely by Shayla Curtis, who finished with a time of 24:05. Rounding out the girls team was Maya Wieland, completing the race in 24:49, and Elena Saldi in 25:58.

Shayla Curtis was exceptionally happy with the race this last weekend.

"Classic skiing has become my favorite ski technique," she said. "The race today was a lot of fun, and I can't wait until we race again."

Devon Calvin, who finished in 15:44, led the boys. Brandon Pollard was the second Outlaws finisher, with a time of 21:03. Seth Roy had a strong race, completing in 23:25.

Brandon Pollard was heard saying that, "I really like classic skiing. Striding during the race came naturally, like running." Brandon had an outstanding race, especially considering he had not used classic skis prior to the race.

Due to the late snow this year, the Outlaws had only been able to classic ski twice prior to the race. The Nordic ski team overcame this adversity and performed very well. All are looking forward to skiing more this week and preparing for the rest of the season.

With the first two races of the season complete, the Nordic team will have a three-week break before racing again. The next race will be held at Virginia Meissner Sno-Park on January 4. The break will give the Outlaws some time to reflect on their previous races and learn some valuable technique before racing again.
