News and Opinion from Sisters, Oregon
As a result of the recent unseasonably warm weather, Sisters Trails Alliance (STA) "trail adopters" are reporting that the surfaces of the STA trail system are becoming unstable as the surface layers melt.
A few inches down the ground remains frozen, preventing the melting ice and snow in the surface layer from draining properly. The result is a very unstable surface layer the consistency of mush in most places.
"We are asking our trail users to avoid using the trails during this time, especially those using bikes and horses," said STA President Gary Guttormsen on behalf of the trails committee. "Using the trails when they are in this condition results in some pretty major damage to the trail surfaces, damage that is difficult to repair. As soon as the ground refreezes or completely melts out we will re-evaluate the trail conditions and let everyone know they are good to go for use. Thanks so much for your understanding and cooperation."
