News and Opinion from Sisters, Oregon
The Outlaws wrestling squad competed at the Adrian Irwin Invitational at Ridgeview High School in Redmond on Friday and Saturday, December 20-21, along with 16 other teams from around the state.
Culver High School took top honors with 297.5 points, followed by Redmond who was runner up with 251 points. Cascade placed third with 234.5 points.
Sisters' matmen had some tough matches, and no one reached the placing rounds. The highlight of the weekend for the Outlaws was freshman Andrew Stevens. Stevens (126 pounds) stepped in for Dyut Fetrow who was out with an injury.
Stevens struggled to fill Fetrow's shoes but would not give up. On the second day of the tournament he was placed in a "second chance" bracket, a bracket offered to those who'd been knocked out of the main tournament by losses.
"He was excited with the opportunity to receive more matches," said Coach John Downs. "He lost two more but won his final match for a seventh-place finish in the second chance bracket. In his final match he continued to work a "stand-up move' that he'd practiced all week. In round three, with only 15 seconds left, Andrew was able to complete his stand-up and then shot back into his opponent, taking him to the mat and running him to his back with a "reverse half,' pinning him!"
Downs noted it was a great win for both Stevens and the team. Stevens accepted encouraging words from his teammates, family and fans in his first Sisters High School win as a freshman.
The Outlaws will be back on the mats at the Bend Invite on Saturday, January 11.
