News and Opinion from Sisters, Oregon
The Journeys art quilt group will display their work in an upcoming exhibit at Sisters Art Works.
Members of the group include Catherine Beard, Helen Brisson, Donna Cherry, Sheila Finzer, Betty Gientke, Jan Hearn, Ruth Ingham, June Jaeger, Jean Wells Keenan Charlene Kenny, Tonye Phillips, Donna Rice, Robyn Ryan and Mary Stiewig. The group continues to push the image of quilts, while embracing and supporting each other in their personal art journey.
Each year the artists throw out ideas for a theme, one that they hope will challenge their creativity and introduce new techniques to their art. They strive to step out of their comfort zone with each piece and view their work from a different perspective.
This year's show title is "Junkyard Journey." The group embarked on trips to a local junkyard in search of inspiration, finding beauty in the discarded goods of our society.
Each has created a piece for the show that range from abstract to realistic images, each telling a story of their journey to the junkyard.
In this year's show viewers will be intrigued with the three-dimensional work of Jean Wells Kennan and the abstract image that Mary Stiewig created.
Betty Gientke explored many embellishments to brighten her image, while Robin Ryan dealt with a personal junkyard.
"Junkyard Journey" opens January 7 at Sisters Art Works, 204 W. Adams Ave. in Sisters. Viewing is open during normal business hours.
An artists' reception will be held Friday, January 17, from 5 to 7:30 p.m. with refreshments and music by John Phillips.
