News and Opinion from Sisters, Oregon
The city's RV park is slated for a significant upgrade between now and when it re-opens (late May or early June). The major upgrade of the existing facility and a new name, Creekside Campground, is the first phase of the program.
If the upgrades are as well received as City Manager Andrew Gorayeb predicts, then Phase 2 of this project will include significant expansion. Using the existing property, with proper sound and sight screening, the park could accommodate upwards of 100 spaces.
Public Works Director Paul Bertagna has the plans, cost and schedule pretty well worked out for Phase One, which will include adding six new spaces, and upgrading 18 spaces from dry camping to full hook-ups. Restrooms and showers are also in the plan.
As the work nears completion with a clear end-date in sight, the city will launch a marketing campaign, and implement an online reservations system.
Gorayeb said, "The Creekside Campground could become a really strong revenue source as well as an opportunity to bring more lodged visitors to our community."
More overnight visitors in Sisters is expected to translate to increased business for all the downtown merchants.
The city expects the campground to open about 180 days a year at first, with a full-time, on-site staff. Consideration will be given to extend the season and/or go to a year-round operation if the users demonstrate sufficient interest.
Celia Hung's Bend/Sisters Garden RV Resort (formerly KOA) campground adjacent to the Rodeo grounds served as an inspiration.
"It is a veritable garden," said Gorayeb. "She is being handsomely rewarded for her investment. I think we are going to realize a dollar-for-dollar payback very quickly."
