Lady Outlaws defeat Mt. View

The Lady Outlaws hit their shots at the free-throw line, which helped them notch a 56-47 win over Mt. View at home on Thursday, January 9. Two days earlier Sisters lost 59-46 on the road in Burns.

Sisters came out strong in the first quarter on Thursday in their match-up against Mt. View. The Outlaws hit their shots, got great rebounds and limited Mt. View to a lone three-point shot and five points from the free-throw line. At the end of the period the Outlaws held a 17-8 lead.

Coach Julianne Horner said, "Our posts, Cierra (Mann), Claire (Henson), and Haylie (Hudson) did an outstanding job inside that allowed for the guards to get the ball to them as well as drive to the basket. I was very impressed with how hard they worked and what a difference it made for outstanding play."

Teams played even in the second quarter, and at the half the Outlaws held onto a nine-point lead with a score of 23-14.

Sisters just couldn't make their shots from the field in the third quarter but did do a good job at the free-throw line and were good on seven of their 10 attempts. The Outlaws allowed Mt. View easy looks at the basket and the Cougars went on a run to narrow the gap. Mt. View made four buckets in the quarter and the Outlaws were fortunate that the Cougars only made four of their eight attempts at the line.

The Outlaws took control in the final period.

Jacobie Petterson was stellar at the free-throw line and made 12 of her 14 shots. Savannah Spear hit all four of her shots from the line and Henson went one for two.

"I have told the girls we win or lose from the free-throw line and they proved they won that game getting it done from the line," said Horner.

Overall, the Outlaws made 28 of their 36 attempts from the free-throw line.

Petterson led the team with 27 points and Spear followed with 13. Boston Moore contributed six points and Henson added five.

Earlier in the week, on Tuesday, the Outlaws fell 59-46 at Burns.

Sisters took a quick lead to start the game, but the Highlanders hit two threes to go ahead 17-13 to close out the period.

Teams went basket-for-basket in the second quarter, but the Outlaws sent the Highlanders to the free-throw line and they were able to convert on three of their five attempts. At the half the Outlaws trailed 29-21.

Sisters was unable to cut the Highlanders' lead in the third and were down by 11 as they entered the fourth quarter. The Outlaws played with intensity and worked to get back within striking distance but couldn't get the break they needed.

"I was proud how the girls never gave up and stayed pushing until the last second on the clock," said Horner. "These girls work very hard and keep at it without losing their confidence. We are getting better every time we are on the floor and making the corrections that need to happen to start league play."

Spear posted 12 points for the Outlaws and Petterson tallied 11. Henson contributed eights points and Moore and Mann each pitched in for four.

Sisters will play at Cascade on Friday, January 17, with a start time of 7 p.m.
