News and Opinion from Sisters, Oregon
The Outlaws wrestled at the Bend Wrestling Invitational held on Saturday, January 11, and competed well against their opponents, many of whom were from larger 5A schools.
Nine teams attended the event. Mt. View took championship honors and finished with 251 points. Bend High was runner-up at 223 and Ridgeview finished third with 210 points. Summit, Burns, La Pine, Ashland, Willamette and Sisters were also in attendance.
Dyut Fetrow proved to be a big surprise for the Outlaws. Fetrow, who normally wrestles at 126 pounds, was injured in their last meet on December 21, and had to take a few weeks to heal. Upon his return, Fetrow had gained a few pounds and so was bumped to the 132-pound weight class.
"Battling at a higher weight class six pounds heavier than he was used to, Dyut was able to earn himself a fifth-place finish," said Coach John Downs.
Fetrow won his first match of the tourney and then lost his second match to the second-place-seated Leiphart from Summit. Fetrow went on to win his next three matches to place
fifth.
"The frustration of his loss gave him extra motivation I hadn't seen in him in a long time," said Downs. "He didn't give up when on his back and would come back and win his matches."
Several other Sisters wrestlers had a successful performance. Zach Reid (106 pounds), Mark Fish (152 pounds) and Tyler Surface (220 pounds) all tied for seventh-place finishes in their respected weight classes.
"This was Mark's first match at this new weight class at 152," said Downs. "Mark told me that he feels much more comfortable at this new weight and his success showed it."
This week's duel versus Summit has been canceled due to injuries and low numbers.
