Mary Elizabeth McGuire May 11, 1924 - January 24, 2014

Mary Elizabeth McGuire, 89, a resident of the Vernonia community, died Friday morning, January 24, 2014, at the home where she lived with her grandson Michael Douglas Roberts and his wife Cari Levenseller.

Mary Elizabeth McGuire was born on May 11, 1924, in The Bronx, New York, the daughter of the late John Douglas Kirsch and Elizabeth Agnes Sullivan.

She was united in marriage to Harold Francis "Mac" McGuire on October 18, 1947, in New York. Mary was a proud Navy wife, following Mac and raising their children wherever duty called. After Mac's discharge from the Navy, they settled in Whittier, and then San Jose, California, until Mac's retirement as a newspaper pressman in 1985.

Mary and Mac found a piece of Heaven on Earth in Sisters. Mary and Mac were members of St. Edward the Martyr Catholic Church. Mary was an active member of the Altar Society, taking care of all the needs for daily and weekend Mass, including altar linens and especially the flowers.

Mary was preceded in death by her husband, Harold, in 2009. She remained in her home at The Pines in Sisters until her health prompted a move to live with her grandson, Michael Douglas Roberts of Vernonia, in March of 2013.

She was also preceded in death by her four children; John McGuire, Elizabeth Grummert, Noreen Litherland and Richard McGuire.

Surviving Mary are her grandchildren Michael Douglas Roberts and his wife Cari Levenseller of Vernonia; and Celeste Litherland-Frost and her husband Nick Frost of Florida; many great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandson, Gideon.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, February 22, at St. Edward the Martyr Catholic Church, located at 123 Trinity Way in Sisters, Oregon. Family and friends are invited to attend a luncheon immediately following the church ceremony, to be held in the church.

The family suggests that remembrances in her memory may be contributions to:

Partners in Care Hospice, Bend, OR 541-382-5882, or to Hospice and Palliative Care Partners, Hillsboro, OR 888-968-9565.
