Outlaws wrestlers host dual meet

The Outlaws hosted their last dual meet of the year on Tuesday, February 4, against Redmond JV. Sisters was down to just seven wrestlers due to both illness and injury and Sisters' Athletic Director Tim Roth reached out to many of the Central Oregon schools in hopes they could combine with the Outlaws and fill the empty weight classes.

Culver's coach, J.D. Alley, contacted Roth and said he had a few JV wrestlers who could use some extra matches and so the Sisters/Culver team was born. Culver was able to send five men to join the Outlaws in their dual against the Redmond.

The dual had several close matches and the final scores showed it. In the end, Redmond JV squeaked by to win the dual 39-33.

Sisters' Dyut Fetrow (126 pounds) dominated his match against Chance Schwerbel. At the end of round two, Fetrow held a 13-2 lead and went on to win in a 15-8 decision.

Sophomore Mark Fish (152 pounds) won by a fall over David Klein.

Fish said, "I knew I had to slow down a bit, because if I moved too fast he'd (Klein) roll me through. I was working his arms and had to get leverage underneath. I slowed down, got on my toes and lifted my hips and got the pin."

Freshman Tyler Surface (195 pounds) pinned Stayton Howard in the second round.

Surface said, "I had a hard time getting a shot on him. At the end I finally got my half-nelson deep enough to get the pin."

Several other wrestlers earned points for the Outlaws. Zach Reid won by forfeit, Culver's Chris Munoz (113 pounds) pinned Jeremy Waldo, and Mitch Adam from Culver (285 pounds) helped the Sisters/Culver team earn a forfeit.

Coaches agreed to have a few exhibition matches to finish out the night. Culver's Mack Little (138 pounds) pinned Leroy Valbert in just 1:09. Fetrow (126 pounds) went up against Tamione Dunnigan (132 pounds) in a tough match against a heavier opponent. Fetrow stepped up and beat Dunnigan with a 10-4 decision. Culver's Brandon Hawes (145 pounds) pinned Dustin Boyd.

The Outlaws had a few other wrestlers go up a weight class to get more experience on the mat. Fish (152 pounds) didn't waste any time and pinned Brian Adams (160 pounds) in the first round.

Coach John Downs said, "Overall, the evening was as energized as always when the Outlaws get to wrestle at home, but the night was even extra special for the team to have a great group of wrestlers from a neighboring team join them, encouraging and rooting each other on.

"I really want to thank the Redmond coaches for obliging Sisters for this combination dual, but most of all I want to thank J.D. Alley and Coach Davis for bringing the extra Culver wrestlers to help the Outlaws out," added Downs.

Two days later, the Outlaws had a three-way dual at Ridgeview High School against Ridgeview and Summit.

The Outlaws were tired from their meet on Tuesday and it showed on the mat.

Dyut Fetrow (126 pounds) was the Outlaws' lone wrestler to win a match. Fetrow pinned both of his opponents, Carson Dedmon from Ridgeview and Reece Burri from Summit.

Although Mark Fish and Chase Lawrence lost their matches, Coach Down was pleased with their efforts.

"I could tell Mark wasn't rested from Tuesday, but that is what I love about Mark, his no-quit attitude," said Downs. "He lost both his matches, but didn't go down without a fight in either match. I have never seen him so exhausted. Chase was still sick from taking time off last week and was exhausted, but as a first-year wrestler he did very well, and he knows every match counts to make him a better competitor."

Fetrow is already looking ahead to district competition.

"I feel very strong and well-fit for district," said Fetrow. "I'm going to go into districts aggressive and be careful and not make dumb mistakes and hope to make it to state."

Wrestlers have a couple of weeks to prepare for districts, which will be held Friday and Saturday, February 21-22, in La Pine.
