News and Opinion from Sisters, Oregon
Zoe Falk's dream of running for a NCAA Division 1 school is now a reality as the record-holding runner signed a national letter of intent with the Northern Arizona University Lumberjacks at a ceremony held recently at Sisters High School.
Falk, who holds school records for 800, 1,500, and 5,000 meters at Sisters High School, will join a running program at NAU that is well known for excellence. In fact the Lumberjacks men's cross-country team placed second at nationals this year, while the women look to return to the limelight in the years to come.
Flagstaff, Arizona, is considered ideal for distance training with its high elevation (7,000 feet) and an extensive trail system. Former Sisters ultra runner Sean Meissner has relocated to the area and calls it "a paradise for runners."
Falk is best known for her exploits at the 800-meter distance. She won the 4A state title as a freshman, placed third as a sophomore, and second last year, lowering her time to 2:15 in the process. Her versatility, however, makes her a very attractive recruit, according to Coach Josh Nordell.
"She ran at state every year in cross-country, placed in four events at state in track in both her freshman and sophomore years, and just keeps getting better," he said. "Northern Arizona got a good one, that's for sure."
The signing ceremony marked a high point for Falk.
"I am so excited to go to Northern Arizona University," she said. "It will be such a great opportunity. The coaches are excited to have me, which makes me feel welcome."
She also expressed some relief that the decision is made and the process is complete.
"I am glad to have everything done," she said.
Of course, she has one last high school track season to round out a remarkable career.
Falk's Sisters family members all attended the ceremony, including Greg and Debbie Willitts, and grandparents Bill and Zoe Willitts.
