If any time is a good time to "shop local," this is it.
Cascade Avenue is being torn up for a new roadbed and the streetscape will be significantly different when the project is done. Until then, downtown merchants are looking at a precipitous decline in traffic past - and through - their doors.
It's not hard to help them out though. Many folks are already making a point of dining out at downtown restaurants, which appreciate their support.
One woman had an idea that helps both merchants and local school kids. She is buying gift certificates from the merchants on Cascade, such as BJ's Ice Cream, Sisters Bakery, and Martolli's Pizza for Sisters Elementary School to use as rewards for the "Positive Behavior Support" program. Her hope is that families of the kids will also purchase something at the same time they use the gift certificate.
All Sisters businesses are accessible during the construction. All you have to do is park on a sidestreet and walk a little. Construction crews have done a good job at making walkways safe and clear - and it's quite interesting to watch the heavy equipment at work.
So think about doing something a little extra to give the downtown merchants a boost while construction is underway. Let's make an anxious time go a little better.
