Boys tennis team sweeps Madras

The boys tennis team continued their winning ways, blanking the White Buffs 7-0 on Tuesday, March 25.

Paul Fullhart (No. 1 singles) prevailed 6-0, 6-0 in his match against Simon Sangha, and Trevor Standen (No. 2 singles) earned an easy 6-2, 6-2 victory over Joseph Calica.

Kobe Martinez dominated his match and notched a 6-0, 6-0 win over Joey Jaminez in No. 3 doubles.

"Kobe is a super frosh," said Coach Bim Gander. "He's won both his matches this year, and none more convincingly than his match today."

Veteran Michael Commins rounded out the Outlaws' singles play. Commins (No. 4 singles) recorded a 6-1, 6-0 win over Saul Jiminez.

In doubles play, only the No. 1, No. 2 and No. 3 teams played due to the fact that both the Outlaws and the White Buffs were short-handed.

Evan Rickards and Devon Calvin continued their dominance at No. 1 doubles. The duo defeated Jered Tichectte and Oved Feliz 6-0, 6-0. Evan and Devon have only lost one game in six sets.

Thomas Schaab and Brennan Miller stepped up and replaced Ethan Stengel and Shawn Horton, who normally play at No. 2 doubles but were both out of town on vacation. Schaab and Miller defeated Obie Eriza and Noel Cardenas 7-5, 4-6, 7-6. The duo overcame a 5-2 deficit in the third set and a match point against them to prevail 7-2 in the tiebreaker.

Twins Jesse and Levi Anderson beat Voshaun Bryant and Omar Dominquez 6-4, 7-5 in No. 3 doubles.

"Jesse and Levi overcame sibling rivalry and performed well as a team for the first time," said Gander.

Gander told The Nugget that he's pleased with his team's progress and performance.

"I'm very happy with how the team has come together," said Gander. "They have improved with every match, and that's a good sign. We're not only winning but we're winning by a good margin against schools much larger than us. We're fortunate to have so many returnees, and also newcomers who are performing well."

The Outlaws will play at Bend High on Thursday, April 3, and on Saturday the No. 1 and 2 singles and doubles players will participate in the White Buffalo Invitational.
