News and Opinion from Sisters, Oregon
The girls' lacrosse team suffered a tough 15-14 loss in overtime to Corvallis on Thursday, April 17. On Saturday, Sisters played a double-header at home. The Outlaws lost 9-6 to Crescent Valley and then finished the day with a big 23-7 win over West Albany.
Sisters started off strong and scored two goals in the first minute of play in their game against Corvallis on Thursday. Langley Vogt scored one minute into the game with an assist by Taylor Schneider. Sierra Slaughter followed with a goal on a breakaway and scored two more goals in the first half, with assists from Vogt and Emily Ford. Jenny O'Connor wrapped up Sisters' first half scoring with 10 seconds left in the first half.
Breanna Perry was the backbone of the Outlaws' defense, and with help from Summer Roberson, Rebecca Gates and MacKenzie Hendrickson, shut down the Corvallis drives. The defense held Corvallis to just 13 shots on goal in the first half. Marissa Young, in her first full game at goalie, blocked seven of the Spartans shots on goal.
Corvallis came out fired up and ready in the second half and held the Outlaws to four goals. With three minutes left in regulation play the Outlaws were down by one. Slaughter scored to tie it up 14-14 and send the game into overtime.
With just a little over a minute left in overtime play the Spartans scored on an unforced turnover and then held on for the win.
"It was a fantastic game and probably the best lacrosse I've seen the girls play yet," said Coach Michele Hammer. "While we didn't get the win, every player did everything right."
Two days later the Outlaws matched up against Crescent Valley in their first game of the day. Sisters had beat the Raiders earlier in their first game of the season, but this time around Crescent Valley's aggressive defense did a great job and shut down the Outlaws' offense. It was a 4-4 tie at the half, but then CV really stepped up their play. The Raiders outscored the Outlaws 5-2 in the second half and recorded the win.
Langley Vogt led the Lady Outlaws with three goals. Adie Ellson, Sierra Slaughter and Emily Ford each added a goal.
Hammer said, "It was a tough loss, but the defense again had a strong showing and kept CV from scoring even more."
The Outlaws were stung from their first loss of the day but came out and dominated in their 23-7 win over West Albany. Sisters' offense and defense communicated well the entire game and planned and executed their plays to perfection.
Jenny O'Connor scored in the first 30 seconds of the contest, and 20 seconds later Sierra Slaughter followed with an additional goal. That was just the beginning of the offensive onslaught. At the half Sisters held an 18-4 lead.
"Our defense was extremely effective," said Hammer. "Breanna (Perry), Marissa (Young), playing midfield and home defense led by Summer (Roberson), Rebecca (Gates), MacKenzie (Hendrickson) and Courtney (Sickau) were extremely effective in stopping West Albany from getting into the shooting zone."
Goalie Bree Papworth read the opposition well and blocked eight shots on goal.
"It was a great way to end a full day of lacrosse," stated Hammer. "The girls played as a team, and they should be proud of themselves."
The Outlaws will play South Salem and Corvallis at home on Saturday, April 26, and a day later will play at 1 p.m. in a non-league game against Central Oregon Lacrosse.
