Girls lacrosse beats West Albany

The girls lacrosse team defeated the Lady Bulldogs 16-14 at West Albany on Wednesday, April 30. Sisters traveled with only 10 players as some members of the squad were unable to play due to injury or athletic code violations.

West Albany got on the scoreboard first, but Sisters answered with a goal from Adie Ellson thanks to an assist from Sierra Hummel. On the next draw, center Langley Vogt took control and passed the ball to Emily Ford who knocked in another goal to put Sisters on top 2-1.

The Bulldogs were able to score two more goals while Sisters' defenders adjusted to make up for fewer players on the field.

"Breanna Perry, Marissa Young, MacKenzie Hendrickson and Rebecca Gates did a great job of adjusting their play, and they stopped direct runs by West Albany," said Coach Michele Hammer.

Vogt scored two quick successive goals at the 14-minute mark, one with an assist from Taylor Schneider.

Junior rookie player Ford scored two more goals, and Taylor Schneider and Hummel each added a goal to give the Outlaws an 8-7 lead at the half.

It was a tight second half. West Albany scored at the start of the half, but Schneider responded with three goals, one with an assist from Ford. Six minutes into the half, Vogt scored two goals thanks to assists from Marissa Young.

Ellson put in another goal for Sisters, and Schneider wrapped up the Outlaws scoring effort with two goals, the last one with just a little over one minute left on the clock.

Sisters maintained their lead throughout the second half. Schneider scored a season-high six goals, and Ford a season-high three goals.

Freshman goalie Bree Papworth had a solid performance. Papworth recorded four saves on 11 shots on goal in the first half and seven saves on 13 shots in the second half.

"We kept the lead in that last half, but it was by no means an easy win," said Hammer. "The girls who have received a lot of playing time these last few games are growing tremendously in both their skill level and their confidence."

The Outlaws were to play their final league game of the season against South Eugene on Tuesday, May 6. They will wrap up their season at the SALI (Sisters Annual Lacrosse Invitational) Tournament on May 17.
