Sisters celebrates Class of 2014

Every graduating class at Sisters High School has its personality and its strengths, but the Class of 2014 has been universally regarded as an exceptional one.

During graduation ceremonies on Friday night, Principal Joe Hosang told the audience that staff knew when the class came in as freshmen that they were a remarkable group. That has proved out, as the class has produced elite scholar-athletes, artists and musicians, most of whom are furthering their education.

"Ninety percent of this graduating class will be going on to college or a post-graduation outcome of their choice," said Superintendent Jim Golden.

The scholastic vigor of the class was reflected in the number of valedictorians and salutatorians. Natalie Ambrose; Emily Corrigan; Sarah Dumolt; Paul Fullhart; Claire Henson; and Shayna Noone all earned valedictorian status, while Tyrell Gilmore; Sonja Lund; Katelyn Meeter; Crystal Reifschneider; and Jarden Weems all earned salutatorian status.

Beyond their successes, Golden noted, the Class of 2014 is full of young people of character.

"They look you in the eye when they talk to you and they show interest in other people and their community," Golden said. "They have strong values and moral compasses."

They also have a sense of humor. Paul Fullhart, one of six valedictorians, offered up a humorous reflection on change. He commented on lessons he's learned from his grandfather: "If there's anything I've learned from him, it's that things were far better in the past. What I've figured out for myself is the past does not define you. If it did, I would still have long hair."

There was a lot of reflection on the past, as one would expect as seniors pass a milestone and take a long look back.

"This is where we chose our path," said valedictorian Claire Henson.

Valedictorians Emily Corrigan and Natalie Ambrose chose to put their valedictory speech across as a rap, which brought the house down.

Music has long been an important part of the SHS experience, and graduation was no exception. The Jazz Choir, under the direction of Rick Johnson, offered up a stunning rendition of the Star Spangled Banner, and graduating musicians performed "Safe and Sound."

Then each graduate marched across the stage to receive their diploma. As Principal Hosang presented the Class of 2014, the newly minted graduates headed through their high school doors for a last time, to gather in front of their alma mater for pictures that would capture in time one of the biggest moments of their young lives.
