Aspen Lakes hosts Mid-Am qualifier

Aspen Lakes hosted a U.S. Mid-Am qualifier on Monday morning, August 4.

The United States Golf Association (USGA) launched the championship for amateurs in 1981. The Mid-Amateur is competition for amateur golfers 25 and older. It is designed to create a formal national championship for post-college amateurs.

Before the advent of the Mid-Amateur, post-college players who had families and day-jobs faced long odds in the Amateur Championship, competing against college players who could devote themselves practically full-time to the game.

According to USGA, only about 40 percent of those who qualify for the U.S. Amateur Championship each year are 25 or older.

The age qualifying format has proved popular, and there are Mid-Am tournaments in almost every state.

This is the second year in a row Aspen Lakes has hosted a Mid-Am qualifier.  

From play Monday, two players will qualify for the Mid-Am to be played at the Old Course at Saucon Valley Country Club in Bethlehem, PA, on September 6.
