News and Opinion from Sisters, Oregon

Fir Street Park makes a splash

With the fountains spouting and the landscaping mostly done, Sisters' new Fir Street Park opened quietly last week.

The splash park quickly attracted kids (big and small) to run through the cool fountains. The park was in use through the warm weekend.

The splash park is a key feature of the park, which also features a timberframe pavilion over a stage, constructed as the Eagle Scout project of Sisters Boy Scout Rory Petterson. Jeff Wester of Ponderosa Forge & Ironworks has built a fire pit, which will soon be installed. The park has family restroom facilities, a picnic area, and benches for parents to sit on while their kids tirelessly storm the fountains.

The park was funded in part through grants. The City of Sisters was awarded the Oregon Parks and Recreation Department 2013 Local Government Grant for the design and construction of Fir Street Park. The grant awarded to the City was $206,534, which was 50 percent of the project cost.

City public works crews put in long hours last week putting in landscaping.

The 2011 Parks Master Plan identified the development of Fir Street Park and its amenities as a top priority for the Sisters park system. Fir Street Park will benefit local residents and the many tourists that visit the community by providing all ages and abilities a unique place to recreate and picnic in downtown.
