News and Opinion from Sisters, Oregon

Sisters girl shines at national track meet

Lexie Miller can run like the wind.

The Sisters fifth-grader was the eighth-fastest 100-meters racer in her age class in the nation at the Hershey's Track & Field Games North American Final.

To get to Hershey, PA, for the August 2 meet, Lexie had to post the fastest time in regional competition for runners from Oregon, Washington and Idaho.

The Hershey games are a 37-year-old tradition that will change next year with a new U.S. Track format for national competition.

"It was fun that we got to that last one," said Lexie's dad, Kevin Miller. "It's really an honor to go there."

Lexie's mom, Eden Miller, was a scholarship multi-event track athlete at Seattle Pacific University. She's an assistant coach for the Outlaws, and it was at Outlaws practices that the Millers saw Lexie's speed blossom.

"Lexie would go and run during track practice sometimes, so that's where we discovered she's a pretty good runner," Kevin said.

While she's obviously talented, track isn't her specialty, according to her dad.

"She's really a dancer - that's her love," Kevin said. "But she likes to run, too."
