News and Opinion from Sisters, Oregon
The annual Labor Day barbecue at the Camp Sherman Store on the Saturday of Labor Day Weekend is always a big deal. For many folks, it is the last hurrah of summer, with good food, good music and good company in a beautiful setting.
This year, it takes on even more meaning. The barbecue will also serve as a going-away party for longtime fly-fishing guide and ski instructor John Judy.
"To have a 300-plus-person going-away party can't be a bad thing," said Camp Sherman Store owner Roger White.
White reported that Judy recently married and is planning to move to Sherwood with his new bride, Sheila. White thought it appropriate - and necessary - to give him a good send-off. Judy has been a noted Camp Sherman resident for decades, introducing many a fisherman to the sport of fly fishing and the glories of the Metolius River.
"There are grandfathers and grandsons who have been guided by John," White said.
Judy will be on hand on the deck at the Camp Sherman Store during the afternoon of Saturday, August 30. The store will sell copies of Judy's books "Slacklines" and "Seasons of the Metolius," and Judy will sign them.
The barbecue gets underway at 5 p.m., featuring music by The Anvil Blasters. There will be an interlude where folks can say a few words about the legendary fishing guide.
