News and Opinion from Sisters, Oregon

Artists exhibit at Sisters Gallery

"Oregon and More," a collection of oils and pastels by Kay and Gordon K. Baker, opens during the Fourth Friday Art Stroll, September 26, at Sisters Gallery and Frame Shop.

The Bakers' show will feature landscape painting of Central Oregon and other areas they have visited, with a fall theme.

Kay and Gordon Baker moved to Bend in 1995 after Gordon's retirement from a major oil company. Gordon Baker is a geologist, environmentalist and self-taught artist. Nature is the common denominator, and painting brings it all together. He paints in a representational style with oil.

"My oil paintings reflect who I am; a summation of a lifetime of experiences," he said.

Kay Baker has created a world of art, starting in the cornfields of Iowa and leading to the far reaches of Africa, where she lived for many years. In addition to her degree in art, Kay has taken classes from many well-known artists. Vivid colors and vigorous brush strokes enable her to capture nature with an understated power.

"I want the viewer of my paintings to sense the emotions I experience when I am painting," she said.

They are both members of the Oil Painters of America and the Plein Air Painters of Oregon as well as other professional organizations. Their paintings are in collections throughout the United States and Europe.

Sisters Gallery and Frame Shop is located at 252 W. Hood Ave. The Fourth Friday Art Stroll, September 26, will be from 4 to 7 p.m. The Bakers' work will be featured through October 22.
