Volleyball team continues winning ways

The Outlaws volleyball squad continues its domination in league play. Sisters beat the Tigers in three sets with scores of 25-6, 25-10, and 25-11 to close out the first round of league playoffs, and two days later defeated the Huskies at Sweet Home with scores of 25-11, 25-14, and 25-10.

Sisters cruised to sweep the Tigers on Tuesday. Nila Lukens led the Outlaws with 12 kills and four aces. Brooke Knirk contributed five kills and Jessie Brigham came through with seven digs and four aces. Jessie gave the Outlaws a big boost in the second game with a long serving streak.

Allie Spear recorded seven kills, three aces and five digs. Hawley Harrer tallied seven kills and dished out 17 assists on the night. Alex Hartford also helped out as setter with 15 assists and served up four aces.

Coach Miki McFadden told The Nugget that Lukens' hitting percentage was off the charts.

"Nila's hitting percentage was just amazing," said McFadden. "She had a big night and was 12-for-13 in kills. She was hitting high and down with balls down the lines, in the middle of the court and across the court. She really didn't have any trouble at all with their block."

On Thursday, the Outlaws recorded another easy win at Sweet Home.

Harrer led the way with 11 kills going 11-for-11. Hawley also dished out 16 assists in the match and Hartford added 14 assists. Lukens contributed nine kills and Knirk tallied five kills and two blocks. Weems pitched in with four kills and three blocks on the night.

Brigham recorded nine digs and five aces and Spear added five kills, four digs and three aces.

Brigham came through for the Outlaws early in the third set. Sisters had committed a couple of errors and had lost their lead. Jessie came through with some great serves and took the Huskies out of their offense. Lukens also had a run of several serves to help boost the Outlaws to a big lead and the eventual win.

"Whenever we get in trouble our serves always get us back and rolling again," said McFadden.

Weems, who plays at middle for the Outlaws, said, "Our connection and chemistry is really powerful this year. We have great athletes who work hard and we're friends on and off the court."

The Outlaws combined for 16 aces in the match.

Sisters is 6-0 in league and 16-1 overall. The Outlaws were to play at Elmira on Tuesday, October 7. Sisters has a bye on Thursday, October 9, and then will participate in the Clearwater Classic at Bend High on Saturday, October 11, and will compete against some of the top 5A and 6A teams in the state.
