Outlaws tie up the Junction City Tigers

The Outlaws worked together as a unit, made big plays, and defeated the Junction City (JC) Tigers 21-14 at home on Friday, October 10.

Sisters took the lead on their second possession of the first quarter on a long drive that was capped off by a 10-yard run off the left side by Mitch Gibney. Josh Andrade added the PAT. The Outlaws scored their second TD off a long drive in the second quarter on a three-yard run by Logan Schutte. Andrade's kick for the PAT was good and Sisters went up 14-0.

JC scored very late in the second quarter on a fourth-and-long pass to narrow the gap to 14-7.

Sisters stopped JC on their first possession in the third quarter, but the Tigers tied it up 14-14 on an interception-return from the Outlaws' 44-yard line.

From there, both teams struggled defensively, and neither team was able to establish much offense until Sisters held the Tigers on a deep drive in Outlaws' territory. Sisters then drove the ball 70 yards for the winning touchdown with 42 seconds left on the clock.

Schutte was the Outlaws' leading rusher with 150 yards on 22 carries. Gibney added 80 yards on 16 carries.

Sisters' offensive line did an outstanding job blocking for the second week in a row, and Gibney was a big factor running the ball between tackles. Schutte also had a great night running the ball and Connor Gellings came in for relief for Schutte and had several good runs.

Coach Gary Thorson noted his offensive line: "The starting offensive line of Reilly Papworth, Devin Slaughter, Brady Wessel, Jacob Gurney, Rory Petterson and Tysen Gill controlled the line of scrimmage for most of the night."

Chance Halley led the Outlaws with seven tackles and three assists, and Head added six tackles. Lane Gladden and Tanner Head both had an interception. Gladden's interception ended the Tigers' last drive of the contest.

Sisters out-rushed JC 243 yards to 167.

"We again got a great effort out of special teams' units and good kicking and punting by Will Luff and Josh Andrade," said Thorson. "The defense was once again on top of their game and shut down a very difficult double-wing offense to stop JC. With the exception of being hurt on the edges on their run game and that late TD pass in the first half, we defended them extremely well.

"The team showed great poise when they gained momentum, and never stopped battling. Tanner Head did a great job leading the offense on the last drive and used up a big chunk of the fourth quarter. We still have a lot of room for improvement, but we are in a great position heading into our last two league games."

Sisters will play at Elmira on Friday, October 17.
