News and Opinion from Sisters, Oregon
Beads have been a means of adornment, self-expression and economic exchange for millennia. Now, two Sisters artists have brought the best of an ancient tradition to Sisters with The Bead Keepers.
The shop, located at 161 N. Elm St. in Sisters, offers a wide selection of select, quality beads from all over the world, custom jewelry - and workshops and classes to help aspiring artists develop their skills and techniques in beading and jewelry-making.
The Bead Keepers is a project of artists Wendy Vernon and Doris Kozlovic.
"Doris and I have been designing jewelry for a very long time," Vernon told The Nugget. "Between us, we've done a lot of bead collecting."
Kozlovic described the extensive layout of beads as "a lot of private stashes that we thought should be put out for public display - and use."
Bead-lovers will find vintage beads, trade beads, semi-precious stones - and the findings needed to create jewelry.
Perhaps most importantly, Vernon and Kozlovic will impart their experience and expertise to artists through workshops starting in November. They'll start students with basic wire-wrapping and basic beading and the creation of hammered metal.
The beads in the shop are laid out in color ranges, "high-graded" for quality. They are displayed on fixtures of reclaimed wood.
Vernon and Kozlovic will display and sell their own jewelry, which they supply to boutiques across the nation, and Vernon will also display her paintings.
The shop is available for children's classes and beading birthday parties.
