News and Opinion from Sisters, Oregon
Convicted murderer Conrad Engweiler was released from prison early Thursday morning.
The Oregon Department of Corrections initially told The Nugget that he was released into the custody of his father, Glenn Engweiler, but then reported that that information was not verified and they could only confirm that he had been released to Deschutes County.
Engweiler, now 40, was convicted at age 15 of raping and murdering a high school classmate in suburban Portland. The Associated Press reported that "the Oregon parole board ruled last month that Engweiler should be released. It was a closely watched decision that angered the victim's family."
The release has also raised concerns in the Squaw Creek Canyon Estates neighborhood, where Glenn Engweiler lives. Residents of the area believe that Conrad Engweiler will be living there with his father.
Deschutes County property records show the property as owned by the Engweiler-Smith Trust in Squaw Creek Canyon Estates.
Neither the parole board nor the department of corrections would confirm an address regarding Conrad Engweiler's release.
Tanner Wark of Deschutes County Adult Parole and Probation explained that community notification is based on an assessment of a parolee's likelihood of re-offending. Under the criteria, Engweiler's status does not rise to the level required for community notification, Wark said.
Conrad Engweiler answered the phone at Glenn Engweiler's residence near Sisters on Monday. He declined to answer any questions regarding where he will be living, other than to say, "there are family decisions to be made."
Wark encouraged Sisters Country citizens to call his office with any concerns, though he said he would not be able to provide any more detailed information than what he provided to The Nugget.
